Treat Myself Better
Treat Myself Better is my first young adult novel (under the pseudonym, Ryenne Nova) that combines mystery with contemporary high school drama, centered on the protagonist trying to move forward while her past threatens to catch up with her.
It follows the main character returning after enigmatically disappearing for several years. From there, she bonds with the five most popular guys of the school, all with the same name. As she bonds with these five guys, she attempts to keep her past life surreptitious to prevent being judged.
The main themes are:
Identity and Reinvention: The protagonist’s return to a New York high school as a new student after disappearing years ago, suggesting themes of starting over and redefining oneself.
Secrets and Pasts: The dark secret the protagonist is hiding connects to her mysterious disappearance, exploring how the past shapes the present.
Popularity and Social Dynamics: It focuses on the protagonist bonding with the five most popular guys and the resulting social tensions.
Jealousy and Revenge: Five suspicious girls planning to get back at the main character out of jealousy, examining the destructive nature of envy.
Belonging and Acceptance: The struggle to fit in while hiding parts of oneself, and finding genuine connections.
High School Drama: The social pressures and conflicts that come with the typical live of adolescence.
The entire intention with Treat Myself Better is to raise awareness to bullying and how bullying can negatively impact the victims’ lives. There is also the didacticism about the daily lives of being a teenager in a public high school that any high school student can correlate to when it comes to drama and peer pressure.
Treat Myself Better is available exclusively on Amazon.
